FIRST READING Taken from-:   “From you shall come forth one who is to be ruler in Israel.” A reading from the Book of the Prophet Micah (Micah 5 :2-5a) Thus says the LORD!  You, O Bethlehem  Ephrathah,  who are little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days. Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who has labour pains has brought forth; then the rest of his brethren shall return to the sons of Israel. And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth. Live history of St Marguerite Bourgeoys of France. Feast day (12 January)

She was born on April 17, 1620 in France, to Abraham Bourgeoys and Guillemitte Granier. She went to Canada as requested by the Governor of Montreal, to teach in a school and also in religious classes.

She recruited ten (10), teachers from France, and others also joined from Canada, with these people as the first sister, she founded a new congregation dedicated to education and spiritual formation of young women, called the sisters of Notre Dame.

One story about St Marguerite is that, she prayed for the cure of a younger nun of the congregation who had fallen ill, the younger nun was cured miraculously on January 1st, 1700. But Marguerite fell ill with a raging fever and died soon thereafter on January 12, 1700.

She was declared as venerable in 1875 by Pope LEO-XIII. She was beatified in November 1950, by Pope Pius-XII and canonised on October 31st, 1982 by Pope John Paul-II.

She is regarded as a patron saint against poverty, loss of parents and people rejected by religious orders.

She was the first Canadian female Saint.
